About Centurion

Centurion is one of the most well-known drinking endurance challenges: take one shot of beer every minute for 100 minutes. Complete all 100 and you earn the title of Centurion — a Roman soldier who commanded 100 men.

This digital version handles the countdown timer automatically, sounds a customisable alert on each shot, tracks your progress with a visual dot grid, and keeps your screen awake using the Web Audio API and Wake Lock — no separate app required.

Non-alcoholic players are fully catered for — the timer works identically with any drink. For other party games try Ring of Fire, Dicey, or Bus Driver.

How to Play Centurion

Set your target — 50 (half-century), 100 (classic), 150, or a custom number

Set the interval — 60 seconds is standard; 30s is harder, 90s is a gentler warm-up

What is a shot in Centurion?

Traditionally one shot (approximately 25ml) of beer per minute — not spirits. Many players use a small shot glass filled with beer. Never use spirits — the alcohol volume over 100 minutes would be dangerously high.

Can I use a shorter interval?

Yes — the 30-second interval means one sip every 30 seconds, a significantly harder challenge. The 90-second interval is a gentler starting point for beginners or for a longer social game.

What happens if I miss a shot?

You are on the honour system. Catch up with the next shot or carry on from where you are — there are no automatic penalties built into the timer.

Does the screen stay on during the game?

Yes — the Wake Lock API keeps the screen active on supported browsers including Chrome and Edge. This prevents your phone from sleeping mid-game so you never miss a shot alert.

Is Centurion safe?

Centurion involves significant alcohol consumption. Know your limits, drink water alongside each shot, eat a good meal beforehand, and stop if you feel unwell. Never drink to the point of illness and never drive afterwards. Non-alcoholic alternatives work identically with this timer.

Can I play without alcohol?

Absolutely. The timer works identically with water, juice, soft drinks or any non-alcoholic alternative. The challenge is about timing and endurance — the drink is your choice.

What are the official Centurion rules?

The standard rules: one shot of beer (~25ml) every 60 seconds for 100 minutes. Variations include the 50-shot Half-Century, team centurion where players rotate every 10 shots, and the rapid 30-second version. This timer follows the standard 60-second interval by default, with all variants available in settings.

How long does a game of Centurion take?
