Frequently asked questions

Divide your total time by the distance. For example, 50 minutes over 10 km is 5:00 per km. This calculator does it for you and also gives your pace per mile and your speed.
It depends on your experience. Many new runners are around 7–8 minutes per km, recreational runners around 6:00, and a sub-2-hour half marathon needs roughly 5:41 per km. Compare yourself to your own past runs rather than to others.
For many beginners 30–40 minutes is a realistic first 5K. Around 25–30 minutes is a solid recreational time, and under 25 minutes is considered strong for a non-competitive runner.
Multiply your pace per km by 1.60934. So 5:00 per km is about 8:03 per mile. The calculator shows both automatically.
About 5:41 per km (roughly 9:09 per mile) held for the full 21.1 km. Use the pace chart below to see the finish times for other paces.
Also about 5:41 per km, because the marathon is almost exactly twice the half. Holding that pace for 42.2 km is the challenge.
Pace is how long it takes to cover a set distance (minutes per km or mile). Speed is how far you go in a set time (km/h or mph). The calculator shows both from the same run.
