How your exact age is calculated
Working out an exact age is not as simple as subtracting one year from another. The calculator counts the whole years first, then the leftover months, then the remaining days, rolling over correctly at the end of each month and allowing for leap years. That is how it can tell you that you are, say, 34 years, 2 months and 9 days old rather than just “34”. The same method works between any two dates, not only up to today.
What people use an age calculator for
Beyond curiosity, an exact age is needed for plenty of forms and milestones: confirming eligibility for a pension, licence or membership, working out a retirement date, or recording a baby’s age in weeks and days. Because it accepts any start and end date, you can also measure the gap between two events, check how old someone will be on a future date, or count down to the next birthday.
